Strikeforce MMA: Overeem vs Werdum Fight Card Info
| June 17, 2011 | Posted by sportsreporter under MMA News & Info, Other Sports News |
This weekend fight fans will get to see intense mixed martial arts action from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. It’ll be Strikeforce’s Grand Prix heavyweight tournament with Alistair Overeem vs Fabricio Werdum the main event of Saturday night!
Alistair Overeem is currently considered best striker in the heavyweight division, while Werdum is its best grappler. Werdum may have his work cut out for him against the current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion. Overeem enters the fight with six straight wins, his last a KO against Todd Duffee to move to 34-11 in mixed martial arts. Before that he defeated Brett Rogers by TKO at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery.
Werdum, the 33-year-old Brazilian, is skilled in jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and Judo. He enters with an MMA record of 14-4. However, his last victory was back on June 26th, 2010 against Fedor Emelianenko, whom he beat by triangle armbar submission. This was considered the Sherdog 2010 upset of the year. Many question if the long layoff may have an effect on Werdum and will give Overeem an advantage here.
These two will be vying to grab the victory and move out of the first round of Strikeforce’s Grand Prix tournament. In addition, Josh Barnett will face Brett Rogers, also in a first round matchup from the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament. For the Semifinals, Antonio Silva awaits the winner of Overeem vs Werdum, while Sergei Kharitonov awaits the Barnett vs Rogers winner.
