On Saturday, June 11th at Elmont, New York, the Belmont Stakes 2011 horse race is on the schedule. This historic race will have a post time around 7PM EST and could feature the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes 2011 winners. The Belmont Stakes is the third race in terms of thoroughbred Triple Crown, although there won’t be one achieved in 2011. The Kentucky Derby went to Animal Kingdom, who failed in a late surge at Preakness. That race went to Shackleford, who is looking to win back-to-back races now as they may meet again in New York.

Belmont Stakes has taken place way back in 1867 when jockey Gilbert Patrick and horse Ruthless won the race. The race had a hiatus for two years in 1911 and 1912, but has gone on from 1913 up through present date. Last year’s winner was Drosselmeyer with jockey Mike Smith. The Belmont race is also referred to as “The Test of Champions” or “Run for the Carnations” and features the winning horse blanketed with white carnations.
